Petersburg's Beloved Beauticians: Illuminating Love, Kindness, and Success through House of Beauty Legacy

We had the privilege of sitting down with Mrs. Carolyn Mayfield, former owner of Carolyn House of Beauty, Karen Mayfield Harris, Owner of Karen House of Beauty, Michelle Mayfield Edwards, Owner of Expressions Hair Studio, and Nicole Collins, Owner of Nicole House of Beauty, who graciously shared their insights into building the third-generation House of Beauty haircare legacy.

Mrs. Carolyn Mayfield originally relocated to Petersburg from Stony Creek in 1972, later moving to Ettrick. She laid the foundation for the House of Beauty Legacy with the opening of Carolyn's House of Beauty in 1982, initially with 12 stylists, including her older daughters as stylists and Karen as a shampoo girl, later joined by Michelle.

After 23 successful years in business, Karen ventured out to open Karen's House of Beauty at 121 Sycamore Street Petersburg VA 23803, where she has continued to serve the Petersburg community for the past 27 years. Twelve years ago, Michelle and her husband established Expressions Hair Studio, located at 2439 County Dr. Petersburg VA 238003, adding to the family's entrepreneurial endeavors. In 2020, Nicole returned to Virginia and opened Nicole's House of Beauty, a spa located at 115 N. Sycamore St. Petersburg VA, 23803, right next door to her mother's salon.

When asked about the secret to their success, they all agreed unanimously: love. Treating clients with love, respect, kindness, and fairness has been the cornerstone of their beauty businesses, allowing them to flourish organically. Nicole emphasized the importance of creating a welcoming environment, fostering a loving atmosphere, and building strong relationships with clients, which are all integral to their success.

Beyond their businesses, the family remains actively involved in the Petersburg community. Reverend Frank Mayfield, Mrs. Carolyn's husband, dedicates his time to feeding the homeless weekly through his ministry called, The Bread of Life, and volunteering daily at Petersburg's Hope Center. Additionally, the salons host an annual back-to-school backpack drive, sneaker drive, and provide support to various local initiatives, demonstrating their commitment to making a positive impact beyond the salon doors.
